ABERDEEN - HOW IT RATES A prosperous, sophisticated city with an historic core. Aberdeen is Scotland's third-largest city. In 1319 it received Royal Burgh status from Robert the Bruce, transforming the city economically. Traditionally known as a university town and fishing port, it is now the main onshore service port for North Sea oil developments. Aberdeen has one of Scotland's most striking skylines. It is nicknamed the Granite City for good reason: buildings such as Marishal College, His Majesty's Theatre and St Machar's Cathedral give the city its distinctive look. The heraldic ceiling in the cathedral dates from the 14th century, and the twin spires are a landmark of Old Aberdeen. King's College is the centre of the university and its chapel is the only original building left of Bishop Elphinstone's university. NIGHTLIFE The heart of Aberdeen's nightlife, The Lemon Tree, hosts live bands, theatre, dance and comedy. His Majesty's Theatre seats at least 1,400 and is visited by Scotland's national arts companies: this week is the turn of the Scottish Ballet. Large clubs, such as Liquid and Tiger Tiger, are very popular, but there are clubs, bars and pubs to cater to everyone's taste. EDUCATION The University of Aberdeen is the UK's fifth oldest university and has a significant social and economic influence on the city. Albyn School and St Margaret's School for Girls are highly rated private schools. Good secondary schools include Oldmachar Academy and Aberdeen Grammar School. For the high concentration of overseas residents there is the International School of Aberdeen and the Total French School. WORKING LIFE Aberdeen has been the heart of Britain's energy industry since the 1970s and as such has low unemployment, although employment levels do fluctuate with the price of oil. UPSIDE Aberdeen is rich in money, scenery, culture and history, yet has a 21st-century outlook. The local whisky isn't bad either: a visit to the eight distilleries and cooperage on a malt whisky trail around the area is a must.
